The importance of tobacco cessation in primary care
Background
The focus of the 2021 yearlong World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) campaign is quitting tobacco. WHO has called for bold and transformative steps which are needed to encourage and support tobacco users worldwide to quit tobacco use:
WHO aims for the year- long campaign to reach one billion people through strategic advocacy and communications campaigns and through establishment of a cessation network that brings together all stakeholders to implement evidence-based polices and scale up tobacco cessation services at the country level.
WHO also aims to ensure at least 100 million tobacco users are empowered with necessary knowledge and have access to tools to make a quit attempt
To reach these goals, transformative approaches are needed to overcome some of the access barriers to effective tobacco cessation services.
