Assessing exposure to scented products in indoor environments and respiratory symptoms: A University Staff Survey

27 Mar 2025
Research Question: What is the relationship between the use of scented products in indoor environments and the respiratory health of university staff in Cyprus and Crete? Background: Scented products are widely used in indoor spaces for creating pleasant aromas and atmosphere, but they often contain hazardous chemicals, such as volatile organic compounds and phthalates, linked to respiratory and other health issues. A few cross-sectional studies have reported significant respiratory health concerns due to scented product exposure, yet little is known about their impact on respiratory health. This study aims to assess knowledge and behaviours regarding the use of these products and explore potential associations with respiratory health. Methodology: Through convenience sampling, a cross-sectional survey targeting 275 university staff members in Cyprus and Crete is being conducted using an anonymous online questionnaire available in Greek and English. The survey will run from mid December 2024 through February 2025 collecting data on socio-demographics, primary and secondary exposure to scented products used in indoor spaces and/or vehicles, frequency of exposure, respiratory symptoms (including ECHRCS III and CARAT), and knowledge and attitudes about scented product use. Statistical analyses will include descriptive summaries and multivariable logistic regression to identify associations between exposure to scented products and respiratory symptoms. The study has been approved by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee (ΕΕΒΚ ΕΠ 2024.01.293). Questions to discuss: • What are the common behaviors and patterns related to the use of scented products among university staff? • How do the reported respiratory symptoms vary with the frequency and type of scented product exposure? • How knowledgeable are university staff regarding the potential health risks associated with scented product use? • Are there specific demographic factors that influence the level of exposure and awareness of health issues related to scented products?
