Users’ perception about the management of their respiratory disease in consultation with their family health team
27 Mar 2025
Introduction: Asthma and COPD are the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases and it is estimated that around 10% of the population suffers from one of them. However, most do not have their disease under control, running the risk of worsening lung function, persistent symptoms and flare-ups that can be fatal. Most of these people do not have adequate medical monitoring, resulting in a significant percentage of patients without adequate treatment, thus increasing the risk of these adverse events.
In 2024, alongside the new reform of primary health care, the contractual indicators in the respiratory area were updated. In total, this set of indicators has an influence of 14.2% on the FDI, assuming a role of great relevance.
With the systematic implementation of an annual consultation for Asthma and COPD, it is expected that the control of these pathologies will improve on an epidemiological scale. To this end, it is crucial to invest in the literacy and training of users, so that they can understand the scope of adherence to control therapy, regular clinical monitoring, early identification of worsening/exacerbation symptoms, the need for prevention and the ability to self-manage. of the disease.
Objectives: To explore users' perceptions regarding nursing and medical consultations, specifically aimed at respiratory pathology, assessing their self-perception of the disease, the importance of control therapy and knowledge of worsening/exacerbation symptoms, as well as their perspective regarding their ability to self-manage the disease and the importance given to preventive methods.
Methodology: Qualitative study, carried out through semi-structured interviews with patients with respiratory pathology (COPD or Asthma) who attend respiratory disease consultations at their family health unit. The sample will be selected using the convenience method and content analysis will be carried out on the data obtained through the interviews.
