Effectiveness of the "AsmaSemCrise" programme in asthma self-management

05 May 2022
Clinical Research Results Abstract Asthma has a significant impact on quality of life, and most asthma patients have mild to moderate illness that can be easily controlled. However, 88% of uncontrolled asthmatics considered having their disease under control. Rehabilitation nursing is essential for empowering people to manage their disease, and social networks may represent an alternative and an opportunity to provide people with the information and tools necessary for self-management.The nurse, particularly the rehabilitation nurse, has a preponderant role in empowering patients to manage their chronic respiratory disease, either through therapeutic education, aiming to make the person aware of their health condition, as well as their involvement and motivation for changing behavior towards the adoption of healthy lifestyles, or for the proper management of the therapeutic regimen, aimed at optimizing the management of their disease.Pulmonary rehabilitation, as a multidisciplinary intervention, aims even from the above points, to train tolerance to effort, using physical exercise techniques adapted to the physical condition of each individualThis is a quasi-experimental study composed of an intervention group, “AsmaSemCrise”, and a control group. The AsmaSemCrise group was given a pulmonary rehabilitation program for 15 weeks, centered on teaching, monitoring and maintaining asthma control.Assessments were carried out at admission and at the end of the program, using the “CARAT” assessment test. The AsmaSemCrise follow-up program consists of a set of structured individual and group rehabilitation nursing consultations. This program was publicized and publicized on a social network and a series of three small presentations were made prior to the follow-up program, in order to arouse curiosity and the need to know more about asthma and assess the control of the disease. In the AsmaSemCrise group, individuals increased, on average, 12.4 points in the total CARAT score. These differences were statistically and clinically significant, in contrast to the differences observed in the control group. The AsmaSemCrise program contributes to training for self-management of asthma, reflected in the increase in the CARAT test score, whether in terms of symptoms of allergic rhinitis or symptoms of asthma, indicating better control of the disease. These findings can be interpreted as an opportunity for the development of new forms of intervention for rehabilitation nurses and other health professionals, in the training of people with asthma and other chronic diseases, using new technologies and to social networks.
