Athens 2024 session spotlight: medication adherence
Each month leading up to the 12th IPCRG World Conference, 9-11 May 2024 we are highlighting a session to give a taste of what to expect from the conference programme - catch up on our previous spotlights of sessions on breathlessness, lung disease in children and mental health. This month, we turn the spotlight towards our session on medication adherence.
This session, organised together with the International Pharmaceutical Federation, the European H2020 ENABLE project and the International Society for Medication Adherence (ESPACOMP), will provide an overview and a detailed look at some of the factors around medication adherence. We will begin with Job van Boven (The Netherlands) looking at definitions, prevalence and the impact of medication non-adherence in CRDs. Betul Okuyan (Turkey) will then discuss how to measure medication nonadherence in CRDs in primary care, before Alexandra Dima (Spain) moves on to examine how to support medication adherence in CRDs using behavioural science digital technologies to develop effective interventions. This talk includes adherence determinants and intervention effectiveness, taking respiratory examples to see the importance of distinguishing between measurement and intervention. It also brings in the role of the multidisciplinary team and how interprofessional collaboration for implementation in primary care can improve our approach to medication non-adherence in CRDs.
The session will close with an interactive discussion panel on implementation challenges and role of the multidisciplinary primary care team. We very much look forward to this enlightening session and to seeing examples of applying new approaches in practice.
