Asthma Right Care update: June 2024

24 Jun 2024

As the Asthma Right Care movement continues to develop and expand, we are pleased to share the latest updates from our country members after our most recent quarterly delivery team meeting in June 2024. Check our Asthma Right Care news feed for previous updates.

Argentina

Our Argentinian group continues to develop its Teach the Teacher programme, now offering Tier 3 workshops in four different provinces. They have also produced a new research publication on the training and evaluation of asthma indicators in healthcare in the Tucumàn province. They continue to work with IPCRG groups in Spain to support the development of new tools

Brazil

Our colleagues in Brazil have produced a video in which the eight person-centred statements of our strategy document ‘What does good quality asthma care look like?’ are introduced by healthcare providers and patient representatives. They are also completing one more Tier 3 Teach the Teacher workshop from the 2023 programme.

United Kingdom

Our colleagues in the United Kingdom have produced a new tool  ‘My Peak Flow Diary’ - alongside a range of webinars, podcasts, animations and online learning modules. Their guide to peak flow meters is already available here.

Greece

Our Greek group is preparing to publish a new paper in the EJGP entitled ‘Primary healthcare professionals’ perceptions, attitudes and ideas regarding asthma management in Greece: a mixed-method study’. The research shows that healthcare providers encounter challenges when implementing asthma guidelines, but Asthma Right Care interventions can address these barriers and support the implementation of efficient asthma management strategies.

North Macedonia

Colleagues in North Macedonia are presenting to the WHO Asthma Right Care as a method to improve care in rural and small urban settlements. They have run 14 workshops reaching 440 GPs and pharmacists with a view to conducting more in the final months of 2024. Additionally, they are preparing a Macedonian Asthma Action Plan and a research project using this plan and peak flow measurement.

Panama

From the Teach the Teacher programme in Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama, the Asthma Right Care group in Panama has prepared a range of initiatives supporting teaching and learning about asthma management in the community, including further Teach the Teacher workshops, new translations and adapted tools, and a new project emerging from the programme called Breathe Without Limits aiming to train multidisciplinary health professionals in primary care in the integrated management of asthma.

Portugal

Our Portuguese group has delivered a series of initiatives to raise the public visibility of Asthma Right Care, including treasure hunts (Peddy paper) and walks (Caminhasma), awareness campaigns on local buses with secondary care colleagues and online educational videos. They have also developed a novel online ‘escape room’ that was shown at the World Conference in Athens,  gamifying Asthma Right Care though competitive, group-based activities, based on clues about diagnosis and management, aimed at colleagues without a special interest in asthma.  IPCRG is supporting its translation into English and Dutch through its Accelerator Programme.  They have also started the dissemination of EpiAsthma an important epidemiological study using real-life primary care data.
