The influence of potential environmental factors on asthmatic events in Klang Valley, Malaysia: A feasibility study of eDPSEEA framework

Clinical Research Results Abstract IntroductionAir quality is associated with adverse health impacts due to rapid urbanisation in South East Asia. Outdoor air quality has been reported to increase the burden of asthma. Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases globally. Malaysia is experiencing seasonal haze episodes that are mainly related to land clearing, biomass burning, forest fires , industrial activities and traffic emissions. Haze was reported to be associated with increased outpatient attendance for respiratory illnesses including asthma, increased hospital admissions, annual economic loss, and mortality. A feasibility study was conducted to perform an ecological analysis of asthma health outcomes in the most populated area in Klang Valley, Malaysia. TMethods The ecological analysis was conducted using the ecosystems-enriched Drivers, Pressures, State, Exposure, Effects, Actions (eDPSEEA) framework, to pilot the approach to determine the influence of potential environmental factors on asthma events over a 4-year period from 2014-2017.Results & Discussion A time-series analysis was conducted using R to identify the lag-period of a haze occurrence towards the health outcome.
