VALIDATION OF A QUESTIONNAIRE ON BELIEFS ABOUT INHALED TREATMENT IN PATIENTS WITH COPD

05 May 2022
Clinical Research Results Abstract Introduction: to carry out a validation study of a questionnaire that assesses beliefs about inhaled treatment in patients with COPD who regularly use these therapies (the CCTI-Questionnaire).Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of 260 patients with COPD included in the electronic medical records database from five primary healthcare centres. Sample size was calculated for a 10-item questionnaire for an estimated Cronbach’s alpha of 0.70, with a 95% confidence level. Study participants were selected by systematic random sampling. Variables: the 10 item CCTI-Questionnaire (personal and telephone interview during pandemic), time for completion, age, sex, educational level, spirometric severity (GOLD criteria), number of exacerbations (previous year), characteristics of inhaled treatment, current smoking habit. Results: Mean age 71,5 (8,12) years; 198 males (75,6%), low educational level 55,6% of the sample; 21,1% are active smokers; mild stage severity 50,8%; average number of exacerbations in the previous year 0.65 (1.05); 36,8% have been using inhalers for more than 10 years. The mean (SD) global score was 6.43 (2), median 7, out of a maximum of 10 points. A score of 5 or more was obtained by 69.5% of patients. The mean (SD) completion time was 3.11 (1.53) minutes. The internal consistency of the questionnaire (Cronbach’s alpha) scored 0.613.In Factor analysis (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test, 0.74; Bartlett’s sphericity test, p <0.0001) 3 factors were identified that explained 47.58% of the total variance. Factor 1 about the use of inhalers (Items 4, 5, 7, 8, 9); Factor 2, about the effects of inhalers (Items 2, 3, 6); Factor 3, about the objectives of the inhaled treatment (Items 1, 10).Discussion: The 10-items CCTI-Questionnaire 2.0 has demostrated acceptable psychometric properties regarding feasibility, reliability and content validity.
